The African American community of Clinton, Tennessee had fought since 1947 for the right to a high school education. Following Brown v. Board of Education, a federal judge ordered Clinton High School to desegregate with all deliberate speed in the fall of 1956.
*On this date in 1956, the Clinton 12 broke the color barrier in K-12 education in the American South. That day, twelve young Black students walked into history in Clinton, TN. They were the first students to desegregate a state-supported high school in the south.
The county was developed for agriculture: tobacco and hemp, and blooded livestock. Numerous settlers came from central Kentuckys Bluegrass Region, where these were the most important products.
