The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) accepts most federal returns as filed. However, we examine (or audit) some returns to determine if income, expenses, and credits are reported accurately. This publication discusses general rules and procedures we follow in examinations.
An IRS audit is a review/examination of an organizations or individuals books, accounts and financial records to ensure information reported on their tax return is reported correctly according to the tax laws and to verify the reported amount of tax is correct. Why am I being selected for an audit? How am I notified?
An examination may be conducted by mail or through an in-person interview and review of the taxpayers records. The interview may be at an IRS office (office audit) or at the taxpayers home, place of business, or accountants office (field audit).
Call the IRS at (801) 620-3852 to check the status of Form 8655 applications and for any other questions regarding the Reporting Agent application process. In approximately two weeks, reporting agents receive a mailed notification of accep- tance from the IRS and, in a separate mailing, a five-digit signature PIN.
Once Form 8655 is signed, any authority granted is effective beginning with the period indicated on lines 15, 16, 18a, 18b, and/or 18c and continues indefinitely unless terminated or revoked by the taxpayer or reporting agent.
