Changes in salmon abundance. Chinook salmon abundance has declined in western Alaska over several decades, culminating with the lowest adult returns on record in the Yukon River in 2022 at 81% below the recent 30-yr mean (1991-2020; Fig. 2).
Although Alaska salmon populations are relatively healthy, challenges remain due to changes in habitat, such as rising water temperatures and ocean acidification.
Chinook salmon, also known as King salmon, is considered by many to be the best-tasting of the salmon bunch. They have a high- content and corresponding rich flesh that ranges from white to a deep red color.
