The Kentucky Weight Distance Tax is a quarterly road use tax charged to carriers operating vehicles with a combined license weight greater than 59,999 pounds. It applies to both interstate carriers and intrastate carriers traveling on Kentucky highways and Kentucky roads.

You need a KYU permit if your gross vehicle weight or combined weight exceeds 59,999 pounds and youre operating vehicles on Kentucky roadways. This includes qualified vehicles used for regular trips or even just passing through.
Weight Distance (KYU) ​For each qualified vehicle operating upon the public highways within Kentucky, the weight distance tax is computed by the rate of $0.0285 (2.85 cents) per mile. Tax returns and remittance covering the taxes owed are due on the last day of the next calendar month following each quar​ter.
What is a KYU number? A KYU number is a tax license number issued for the Kentucky Weight Distance Tax. Under KRS 138.660(3)​​, any carrier over 59,999 pounds traveling in Kentucky is subject to this tax.
