Begins by inspecting the outside sidewall, the tread area and the inside sidewall of each tire. Look for punctures, snags, exposed cords and missing valve caps. Also make sure that all tires on each axle are either bias tires only or radial tires only. Never allow a mix of bias and radial tires on a single axle.
The minimum legal limit is 2/32 of an inch. This doesnt mean that tires are perfectly safe if they have 3/32 left of tread. This is simply the limit at which you wont pass your state safety inspection. Your tires become incrementally less safe as the tread wears down.
Worn Tires The tread depth of the vehicle tires must be at least 1/16 of an inch (1.6 mm) over the entire tread of the tire. Inspectors will use a tread-depth gauge at any two adjacent major grooves at three areas spaced approximately equally around the outside of the tire to test the depth.
Look at the tread and sidewalls for any cuts, scrapes, punctures, bulges, bumps or s. If you see anything suspicious, have a tire service professional take a closer look. You also want to keep an eye on your tires age.
Anyone can do the dot inspection. You just need a decal,i have them send me an im with address and i will send one for ya. Most shops wont tell you that their is no requirements to sign it off.
