Why do street names change?

Learn the regulations in your city or town. Most require a majority of and sometimes all property owners with addresses on the street to approve of the renaming before a municipal government will consider it. Businesses can be especially averse to address changes.

How hard is it to rename a street?

Many, if not most cities, have numbered streets running one way (such as north/south), and named streets running the other way (such as east/west). Numbered streets can be named street, avenue, place, etc, just as names can. There is no uniform method for naming streets in US cities and towns.

Can you change the name of a road?

To change a street name, the council will ballot residents on the issue. At least two-thirds of residents must be in favour of the change before the council takes action. This is a time-consuming process and the council is only able to progress one such change at any time.

What happens if your street name changes?

As a general rule, street name changes fall under the management of the municipal government. This means that some functions needed to change the address in other systems are the responsibility of the city. For example, the United States Postal Service needs to be notified that the street name has changed.

Why did my street address change?

Street numbers change for a variety of reasons. They change to resolve duplicates, help first responders more quickly locate emergencies, and fit the sequence with the rest of a street as its further developed. Changes to street numbers also include fixing errors in the United States Postal Service (USPS) data.
