The University of Tennessee, Knoxville (or The University of Tennessee; UT; UT Knoxville; or colloquially UTK or Tennessee) is a public land-grant research university in Knoxville, Tennessee, United States.
Names of the institution have included the following: Blount College, 17941807; East Tennessee College, 180740 (a rechartering); East Tennessee University, 184079; and the University of Tennessee, 1879present.
He gave several reasons for adopting a new name: It was a reaction against his early inferior work, published under his real name; his new name had been a college nickname; he chose the name because his father was from Tennessee; the name was unique.
Complications associated with the Civil War prevented the formal designation in Tennessee until 1869, when the former East Tennessee University became the states land grant institution. In 1879, the legislature changed the institutions name to the University of Tennessee.
History states that James Glen, the Governor of South Carolina, authored the modern day spelling, T-e-n-n-e-s-s-e-e. He used this spelling in his official correspondence during the 1750s. ing to present-day belief, it was Andrew Jackson who proposed the name for our State, when it joined the Union in 1796.
