Apply for vehicle retirement. Our vehicle retirement option offers an incentive for retiring your operational vehicle. To qualify, your vehicle must be drivable and you must meet eligibility requirements. If you meet the income requirements, you may receive $1,500 or $2,000 to retire your vehicle.
If your vehicle has recently failed a smog check or does not meet the Vehicle Buy Back program requirements, you can contact the California Bureau of Automotive Repairs Consumer Assistance Program at 1-866-272-9642.
If your vehicle failed its biennial Smog Check inspection, our repair assistance option may assist with costs towards your vehicles emissions-related repairs. Model year 1996 or newer vehicles may qualify for up to $1,450 for emission-related repairs.
The owner must retire the vehicle at a dismantler under contract with the Bureau. For low-income eligible applicants, the Bureau also offers financial assistance of up to $1,200 toward emissions-related repairs for vehicles remaining in service that cannot pass the biennial smog check inspection.
