DEFINITION. Under the direction of the Superintendent and/or designee, responsible for enforcing the rules and policies of the district for proper school attendance. He/she shall extend every effort to see that students attend school regularly when not ill and that they report to class promptly.
Where it exists, a school truancy officer is often concurrently a constable or sheriff. Children are required by law to remain in school until the age of 16, although some states require schooling through age 18 unless an absence is formally excused by a school official or if the child has been expelled.
For the first offense, the fine may not exceed $300, together with court costs. For the second offense, a person in parental relation may not be fined more than $500, together with court costs.
The truancy officer provides assistance to the instructional personnel in interpreting and enforcing compulsory attendance laws and resolving truancy, excessive absences, and tardiness problems. Serve as district liaison to parents, law enforcement agencies, and court personnel.
