The 5 Ps of safeguarding are Prevention, Protection, Partnership, Proportionality, and Accountability (People-centred approach). These principles guide actions to prevent harm, protect individuals, collaborate effectively, ensure responses are proportionate, and uphold accountability in safeguarding.
The 5 Rs of safeguarding are: Recognise. Respond. Report. Record. Refer.
Urgent concerns about a child If you have urgent child protection or safeguarding concerns about a child or young person, please make an immediate referral by calling the: Access to Childrens Services team on 020 7641 4000 (9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday) or Emergency Duty Team 020 7641 2388 (outside of these times).
The adult must be informed that a Safeguarding Concern has been submitted, unless it is unsafe or impractical to do so. A Safeguarding Concern can still be submitted without the adults consent if vital or public interest considerations apply (see 2.1 above).
What happens after a child protection/safeguarding referral has been made? The referral will be reviewed often by a multi-agency team with representatives from social care, police and health sometimes called multi-agency safeguarding team (MAST) or multi-agency safeguarding hub (MASH).

Where the concern is about a child and someone in connection with your organisation is accused of causing the harm or abuse, reporting will involve speaking to your local authority designated officer (LADO). Every local authority has either one person or a whole team in this role.
