STANDARDIZED FIELD SOBRIETY TESTs: There are three NHTSA/IACP-approved SFSTs, namely Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN), Walk and Turn (WAT), and One Leg Stand (OLS).
The original studies yielded approximately 16 tests, but the NHTSA reduced these to three primary tests. These are the horizontal gaze nystagmus, the walk and turn, and the one-legged stand. Additional tests may be used by police officers. SFST are considered divided attention tests.
Walk and Turn The WT test is arguably the most notorious traffic sobriety test because it is both complicated and has the highest fail rate. Heres why. Walk in a straight line, heel to toe, for ten steps. Turn around and walk back.
