The current surgical technique incorporates the novel ACL repair methods in a double-bundle procedure, wherein one bundle contains repaired ACL tissue, and the second bundle contains a hamstring autograft, and each bundle is tensioned independently.
The ACL measures 31-38 mm in length and 10-12 mm in width, with the anteromedial bundle (6-7 mm) slightly thicker than the posterolateral bundle (5-6 mm) 5. However, it is considered to be the weaker of the two cruciate ligaments 8.
The ACL arises from the anteromedial aspect of the intercondylar area on the tibial plateau and passes upwards and backwards to attach to the posteromedial aspect of the lateral femoral condyle. The ACL tibial footprint substantially overlaps the anterior root lateral meniscus footprint 6.
ACL is an intrasynovial structure. Although ACL has been described as two bundles ing to tibial adhesion location, it has been shown that it consists of three bundles in recent studies.
The ACL is composed of dense docHub tissue in an intraarticular, extrasynovial location. Although anatomic variants exist, the ligament is composed of two functionally distinct bundles, the anteromedial and the posterolateral.
