Quotes in Press Releases Now with that in mind, its important to note that the quotes you include are perhaps the most important part of your press release. Why? Well, not only do they offer a more human side to your release, but they also lend a bit of credibility.
Dont leave quotes to the end of the release. This might be where you were told to put them but if something is important in a press release, it should come near the beginning. Leave them until the penultimate paragraph and you give the impression that they cant be terribly important.
These are the elements of a standard press release: Headline. Subheader / Lead. Dateline. Body. Quote. Company info (boilerplate) Logo. Media contact information.
Quoting basics When you quote, you include the words and ideas of others in your text exactly as they have expressed them. You signal this inclusion by placing quotation marks ( ) around the source authors words and providing an in-text citation after the quotation.
Consider length: Say enough to convey a complete thought, but not too much. Include information that adds detail and depth, not just basic facts that the body of the release should cover. Use a straightforward style when attributing a quote. The verbs said and says help when attributing a quote.
Embedding a quotation means that the quotation is included in a single sentence with many of your own words and commentary. The most sophisticated embedded quotations have commentary before and after the words you are quoting (see example #3).
Far from being fillers, quotes are arguably the third most important parts of press releases. Theyre the only parts of a release the media cannot change. So, dont waste them with bland niceties. Use quotes to express valuable opinions, explain the benefits to users, add credibility to claims or add a human element.
Keep reading for what I recommend leaving out of a press release unless there are unique and compelling reasons to do so. Overly Promotional Writing. First Person References. Uncredible Sources. Me-Focused Headlines. Quotes that Lack Substance. Complicated Language. Details Outside of the Core Announcement. Too Many Links.
