Veterans with a 100% disability rating are fully exempt from property taxes. 70% to 99% may receive a $12,000 exemption from their propertys taxable value.
Under the program, qualifying homeowners age 65 or older, disabled homeowners, as well as disabled veteran homeowners or their surviving spouses receive tax relief from the taxes due on their property. Homeowners must have been 65 by December 31 of the tax year for which they are applying.
Be 65 years of age or older by the end of the year in which the application is filed. Have an income from all sources that does not exceed the county income limit established for that tax year.
The Tennessee State Department of Revenue is the only authorized agency which can refund an overpayment of Realty Transfer and Mortgage Tax. To request a refund you will need to include the following items: Copies of the instruments filed. Receipts showing taxes paid on the instruments filed.
Senior Primary Residence Classification (aka Portable Senior Classification): For those who qualify, 50 percent of the first $200,000 of actual value, or the amount that causes the assessed value to be $1,000 or greater, of the applicants primary residence is not taxable. The State will pay the exempted property tax.
