The marriage ceremony must be performed within 60 days of the issuance of the license by a civil marriage celebrant or religious celebrant authorized by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Upon completion of your marriage ceremony and your officiant submitting the proper documents, you will receive a marriage certificate.
Upon receipt, the Clerks Office will mail a certified copy of the marriage license to the couple. A copy of the marriage license will be retained by the Circuit Court Clerks Office and the Virginia Department of Health, Division of Vital Records.
Fairfax County does not provide Justice of the Peace services at the Courthouse. Civil Marriage Celebrants are available by appointment at the location of your choosing. Contact the celebrants listed to schedule arrangements for your ceremony.
The marriage and filing of the documents takes about five minutes. Printing out your certified copies takes about four minutes. The entire process from start to finish can take less than 30 minutes and for less than $110.00 if its all done in Winchester Virginia.
All Vital records can also be obtained from the Virginia Department of Health, Division of Vital Records, 2001 Maywill Street, Suite 101, Richmond, VA 23230. The general information number is 804-662-6200. Copies of marriage licenses can also be obtained from your county Clerks Office.
