The National Science Foundation (NSF) uses Research.gov, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) uses the eRA Commons, and most other federal agencies use Grants.gov.
All Senior/Key Personnel and Other Significant Contributors listed on an application are also required to have active eRA Commons usernames (Commons IDs). Note: A single Commons account can be affiliated with multiple organizations. It does not matter which organization initially establishes the account.
Institutions and individuals working in a variety of roles on a grant application or award must have eRA Commons accounts to do business with NIH. eRA Commons accounts fall into three basic categories: administrative, scientific, and other.
eRA Commons is the online grants management system used by applicants and recipients to track their submitted applications, complete post-award activities and submit various reports. All applications are submitted via Grants.gov and received by eRA systems for further processing.
Registering with eRA Commons can take up to four weeks to process. It is encouraged that applicants register with eRA Commons as soon as possible to avoid any delays. Registration is a one-time process, during which the Signing Official (SO) will have the option to create an Account Administrator (AA) account.
