How many letters of recommendation do you require? Each program requires three (3) letters of recommendation, at least two (2) of which should be from academic sources.
Most academic programs understand that the submission of recommendation letters may be beyond your control and that some may arrive later than others. You do not need to wait for all your recommendation letters to be submitted before submitting your application.
Applicants who have attended SDSU, please note that you must submit to SOPHAS transcripts from all colleges/universities you have attended, including SDSU. Three letters of recommendation are required. Two should be academic references, from professors who have taught you in class.

The recs themselves can be submitted after the application deadline. The same rule also applies for the counselor rec; if it's something that someone else is writing for you, it doesn't have to be in by the deadline.
They are late to class, late returning student work, and late in sending recommendation letters. Professors may explain that graduate programs expect faculty letters to be late. That may be true (or not), but it's your job to ensure that your letters arrive on time.
Ideally, you should ask for a letter of recommendation at least four weeks before the due date, with two weeks as the absolute minimum. However, if there are extenuating circumstances and you have a good relationship with the person you are asking, it's okay to ask with less than two weeks' notice.
Recommenders are strongly encouraged to submit their letters by the deadline, but will still be able to submit after the posted date.
Graduate programs understand that, if an applicant applies shortly before the deadline, a recommender may not be able to get their recommendation in before the deadline passes. However, graduate programs will expect letters of recommendation to arrive shortly after the application has been submitted.
