The Environment Rating Scales (ERS) are designed to assess process quality in early childhood groups. Process quality consists of the various interactions that go on in a classroom between staff and children, staff, parents, and other adults, among the children themselves.
When conducting a survey, there are four types of rating scales that can be used effectively: Graphic rating scale. Numerical rating scale. Descriptive rating scale. Comparative rating scale.
The three assessments used in the state of North Carolina are the ITERS-R (ages birth-2.5) the ECERS-R (ages 2.5-5), and the FCCERS-R, which is designed to assess family childcare programs. Scoring well on the ERS assessments takes preparation and practice.
The scale is designed for single groups of children, such as a classroom or day home. The ECERS-R provides a profile of the overall social/cognitive learning environment on a 1 7 rating scale.
School-Age Care Environment Rating Scale (SACERS) Thelma Harms, Ellen Vineberg Jacobs, Donna Romano. 1995. Designed to assess group-care programs for children of school age, 5 to 12 years.

The ECERS-R contains 7 subscales (see Measurement Areas section above for scales) that trained ECERS-R observer/scorers must complete. Each subscale consists of 4 10 items that provide an overall profile of the subscale based on observer ratings.
There are 4 (four) different tools that are used in the ERS: the Infant and Toddler Environment Rating Scale (ITERS), the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS), the Family Child Care Environment Rating Scale (FCCERS) and the School Age Care Environment Rating Scale (SACERS).
