Fried frailty scale includes five components, among which three or more were defined as frailty: unintentional weight loss (10 lbs in the past year), self-reported exhaustion, weakness (grip strength), slow walking speed, and low physical activity.
In the absence of a gold standard, frailty has been operationally defined by Fried et al. as meeting three out of five phenotypic criteria indicating compromised energetics: low grip strength, low energy, slowed waking speed, low physical activity, and/or unintentional weight loss (2) (Table 1).
The Fried frailty phenotype (FP) assesses physical frailty through five criteria: unintentional weight loss; weakness or poor handgrip strength; self-reported exhaustion; slow walking speed; and low physical activity.
7 Severely Frail Completely dependent for personal care, from whatever cause (physical or cognitive). Even so, they seem stable and not at high risk of dying (within ~ 6 months). 8 Very Severely Frail Completely dependent, approaching the end of life. Typically, they could not recover even from a minor illness.
Fried frailty criteria Fried and colleagues developed five criteria (weight loss, exhaustion, low physical activity, slowness and weakness) to be used for identifying frail older people [5]. In contrast with the original criteria, we replaced the two physical measurements of slowness and weakness by questions.

The Edmonton Frail Scale (EFS) is a frailty screening scale initially developed to predict complications of cardiac surgery in older people. It was validated in a study with 158 older people, either in or outpatient geriatric clinics (19).
FIFE is a 10-item assessment instrument with scores ranging from 0-10. A score of 0 indicates no frailty; a score of 1-3 indicates frailty risk; and a score of 4 or greater indicates frailty. TARGET POPULATION: All older adults with multiple health problems.
