A teams finish in the standings is based on the Total of the Individual Places of their top 5 runners. A team must have 5 finishers to have a valid score. So a perfect score in Cross Country (otherwise known as slamming a meet) is 15 (1+2+3+4+5).
Team score: The aggregate score of the finishing position of the top 5 runners on each team. The team with the lowest total score out of all the teams will win the race. A perfect score is a score of 15 as the top 5 runners would have finished in first, second, third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
Typically each team is made up of 7 runners and only the top five runners places go towards determining the teams total. In a Cross Country meet, a tie is broken by taking the place of the sixth runner for each team in the tie.
Cross country: Riders are penalized 0.4 points per second they finish after the optimum time, which is calculated by dividing the chosen distance by the chosen speed. Riders must complete the course in twice the optimum time in order to avoid elimination.
A cross country meet is scored by each team adding up the places of its top 5 finishers. As in golf, the low score wins. For example, a team that scores 26 points places ahead of a team that scores 29 points, as follows: Hills McArthur 1 2 4 3 5 7 6 8 10 9 Score 26 Score 29 (Hills Wins!)
