Typically, GCSE Maths exams consist of three separate papers: Paper 1 (non-calculator) and Papers 2 and 3 (calculator). Each paper lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes, amounting to a total of 4 hours and 30 minutes of exam time, distributed across the exam period.
For paper 2 and paper 3, while all questions requiring a calculator can be answered fully using a four-function calculator (plus, minus, multiply, divide), GDCs are allowed during the examination.
Paper 1 (Non calculator paper) Paper 2 allows pupils the use of calculators to solve problems. Only calculators that are approved by SEAB will be allowed for use in the examinations.
Paper 2 consists of two questions that come from all units of the syllabus. Students must answer one of the two questions and will have 105 minutes to do so. Students may use a calculator.
Again, students may be assessed on any of the topics outlined above, although in paper 2, a calculator is allowed. Lasting 90 minutes, the overall score of this paper is 80 marks and makes up 33⅓% of the GCSE maths assessment.
