Since the inception of NFPA 25 in 1992, hydrostatic testing has been required on specific systems typically at five-year intervals. It is conducted to verify the integrity of a system. Typically, the requirement has been to test systems at 200 psi or 50 psi above the maximum pressure for two hours.
Hydrostatic testing of hazardous liquid pipelines requires testing to at least 125% of the maximum operating pressure (MOP), for at least 4 continuous hours, and an additional 4 hours at a pressure of at least 110% of MOP if the piping is not visible.
Hydrostatic testing is a pressure-based technique used to test the integrity of piping systems, gas cylinders, boiler components, and all other kinds of pressure vessels. Hydro-tests are commonly done after repairs and downtime to determine if items will operate properly when put back into use.
Since 1999 the safety factor has been 3.5 - i.e. the actual strength of the material is 3.5 times higher than the maximum allowable stress. So when a pressure tests is performed at 1.5 times the MAWP, there is still plenty of margin left in the design and it wont damage anything.
Attack fire hose should be service tested to a minimum of 300 psi or a service test pressure marked on the hose. Supply fire hose should be service tested to a minimum of 200 psi or a service test pressure marked on the hose.
