Exxon Mobil Corporation (/ˌɛksɒnˈmoʊbəl/ EK-son-MOH-bəl) is an American multinational oil and gas corporation headquartered in Spring, Texas, a suburb of Houston. Founded as the largest direct successor of John D. Rockefellers Standard Oil, the modern company was formed in 1999 following the merger of Exxon and Mobil.
The two oil giants decided to merge in a deal worth $81 billion, creating the worlds largest energy company at the time. The merger was a complex process that took over a year to complete. Exxon and Mobil had similar cultures and operational styles, which facilitated the integration process.
Because its management concluded that the use of three trade names, HUMBLE, ESSO and ENCO, was confusing to customers, in late 1972 Humble Oil Refining Company adopted the name EXXON as its sole primary brand name and on January 1, 1973, Humble Oil Refining Company became Exxon Company, U.S.A. Exxon spent in excess
At the same time, the company changed its corporate name from Standard Oil of New Jersey to Exxon Corporation, and Humble Oil became Exxon Company, U.S.A. The rebranding came after successful test-marketing of the Exxon name, under two experimental logos, in the fall and winter of 197172.
Over the past 140 years ExxonMobil has evolved from a regional marketer of kerosene in the U.S. to one of the largest publicly traded petroleum and petrochemical enterprises in the world. Today we operate in most of the worlds countries and are best-known by our familiar brand names: Exxon, Esso and Mobil.
