A cardboard boat race, sometimes known as a boat regatta, is a popular construction competition for people of all ages, with target audiences for competitions ranging from elementary-school students to college students and adults.
The basic right-of-way rules are: When two boats on opposite tacks meet, the onus is on the port-tack boat to stay clear of the starboard boat. A boat is on port tack when the wind comes from the left side of the boat; a starboard tack is when the wind is on the right side.
You cannot wrap the entire boat with plastic or duct tape, or any similar tape or wrap. Duct tape can only be used at the seams and stress points. However, you are allowed to reinforce all seams and stress points with tape before waterproofing. Boats may not exceed more than 1-inch of cardboard thickness.
Duct tape (good for tight seals on edges, but hard to paint) Masking tape (good for going over edges and easy to paint, but not real water tight) Sturdy waterproof glue I found carpenters wood glue works best. It comes in large bottles, dries quickly, holds tight, and is waterproof!
Boat Design: A flat bottom boat is recommended. V-shaped bottoms are likely to tip over unless the V is very gentle. The lowest center of gravity is the most stable. Kneeling or standing will cause you to tip over.
