Currently, there is only one fully restored and flying Fw 190 in the world. Flying Heritage Collection in Washington has a Fw 190A-5 that was assigned to JG 54 near Leningrad during WWII.
Although the engine did have some problems to overcome, the FW-190 showed excellent handling characteristics and its wide undercarriage made takeoffs and landings less hazardous. Powered by the new BMW engine, which produced 1,600 horsepower, the FW-190A-1 was armed with four wing-mounted 7.92mm MG17 machine guns.
The Spitfire handles well, is light on the controls, faultless in the turn and has a performance approaching that of the Me 109. As a fighting aircraft, however, it is miserable, Major Werner Mlders, JG 51, Luftwaffe.
The Fw 190 was given the nickname Wrger, Shrike in English. It was also known as the butcher bird, a name for several shrike species that impale the insects, rodents and lizards they catch on the thorns of plants. The sinister name was well-earned in service.
P-51 had an advantage at altitude and was designed for maximum range. FW-190 had a firepower advantage and roll advantage. Neither was particularly adept at turning circles. Both dove well and both had good visibility.
