The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has its own safety and health requirements that apply to all Corps of Engineers activities and operations. EM 385-1-1 is the Safety and Health Requirements Manual where all these requirements are laid out. EM stands for Engineering Manual.
EM 385 training (sometimes referred to as EM 385 certification) is mandatory for anyone who works on military and federally funded contracts or projects, including contractors and military or government employees expected to enforce or comply with EM 385-1-1.
OSHA has broader training requirements and mandates that each worker is trained to avoid and recognize unsafe work conditions. This includes regulations suitable for different work environments that can control or reduce hazards. EM385 training requirements are more rigorous in comparison.
The general rule of thumb in regards to EM 385-1-1 certifications is that they do not normally expire. Once you have successfully completed a EM 385-1-1 course, the only requirement to keep it updated and valid is to take the 8-hour refresher course at least once a year.
Effective March 15, 2024, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has released a major revision of the EM 385-1-1 manual. In response, OSHAcademy is offering an updated 40-hour EM 385-1-1 program for the 2024 edition.
