The Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) was an international cooperative effort to explore and study the composition and structure of the Earths ocean basins. ODP, which began in 1985, was the direct successor to the highly successful Deep Sea Drilling Project initiated in 1968 by the United States.
The Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) was funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and 22 international partners (JOIDES) to conduct basic research into the history of the ocean basins and the overall nature of the crust beneath the ocean floor using the scientific drill ship JOIDES Resolution.
DSDP was the first of three international scientific ocean drilling programs that have operated over more than 40 years.
