In 1945, the official college name became Southwestern At Memphis. On July 1, 1984, the name of the College was changed to Rhodes College in honor of Peyton Nalle Rhodes, president from 1949 to 1965, who joined the faculty in 1926 and served the institution until his death in 1984.
Rhodes College consistently ranks among the top liberal arts institutions in the United States, recognized for its academic rigor, commitment to student success, and vibrant campus community.
The Seal of Rhodes College is located in the Cloister of Southwestern Hall. Tradition holds that if a student steps on the seal, he or she will not graduate on time, if at all. The senior class finally gets a chance to cross the seal during Commencement.
Many LGBTQIA+-related student groups utilize the Resource room (located on the third floor of Burrow hall), which offers a welcoming and supportive environment for LGBTQIA+ people and their allies. This space is also a great place to find information, resources, and referrals on LGBTQIA+ issues.
