Meers Fault is a fault in Oklahoma that extends from Kiowa County to Comanche County. It is marked by a 2226 kilometers (1416 mi) long conspicuous fault scarp but the fault extends beyond the ends of this scarp.
The earthquake was the largest ever recorded in the state, substantially exceeding a 5.1 magnitude earthquake which struck near Fairview in February 2016 and slightly more powerful than the 5.7 magnitude 2011 Oklahoma earthquake in Prague, Oklahoma.
Before Oklahoma became a state, the earliest documented earthquake epicenter within its current boundaries occurred on October 22, 1882, probably near Fort Gibson, Indian Territory, although the exact location cannot be precisely determined.
Ground motion from earthquakes is recorded at nine widely separated locations in Oklahoma. The main recording and research facility, station TUL, is located near Leonard, in southeastern Tulsa County.
