Scientists have explored only about 15 percent of the bottom of the Great Lakes. An initiative called Lakebed 2030 hopes to change that, with a goal of creating a complete map of the Great Lakes by the end of this decade.
As of February 24, 2025, Great Lakes ice cover is 32 percent. Of note, due to an arctic blast in January, Lake Erie ice coverage increased from 30 percent to more than 80 percent over four days and is currently greater than 90 percent ice covered. This much ice has not been seen in Lake Erie in three years.
Theyve found ancient trees roots still intact at the bottom of the lake. They located peat bogs where seeds have been preserved by the lakes cold, fresh water. And importantly, theyve developed a template for doing prehistoric research underwater one that will soon be put to use elsewhere in the Great Lakes.
Water Temperature: The Great Lakes can be quite cold, even in summer, which can lead to hypothermia. Rip Currents: While less common than in the ocean, some areas of the Great Lakes can still experience dangerous currents. Visibility: The water can be murky, making it hard to see underwater hazards.
