The play the kora, the performer uses only the thumb and index finger of both hands to pluck the strings. The remaining fingers depress the strings to create different pitches and to secure the instrument.
The Gambia River valley is one of the main centres for the playing of this instrument. Its origins are obscure, but it is traditionally associated with royalty, the ruling classes, or religious practices. The kora is used by male musicians mainly to accompany narrations, recitations, and songs in honour of a patron.
The kora, an instrument that combines features of the harp and lute, is constructed from a hide-covered calabash gourd resonator and a long hardwood neck. Historically its twenty-one strings were made from thin strips of finely twisted antelope hide.

This hereditary caste of professional musicians of the West African Mand peoples are used as an intermediary when a young man wants to request a girls hand in marriage. They are also tasked with preserving the communitys customs, history and genealogy.
The Kora is essentially a harp-lute; there are no frets and there is one note per string. It has 21, sometimes 22, strings made from fishing line. It originates from the Mande peoples of West Africa.
