Optimal Power Flow (OPF) seeks to optimize a given cost, planning, or reliability objective by controlling power flow within an electrical network without violating networked power flow constraints or system and equipment operating limits.
Load flow provides sinusoidal steady state of complete system real and reactive power generated, voltages and absorbed and line losses. Since the load is a static quantity and it is the power that flows through transmission lines it is also known as Power Flow studies.
The AC optimal load flow problem such as the OPF based on Gradient and Newton׳s methods consists of finding the active and reactive power outputs and the voltage magnitudes of any generator unit in order to minimise the operating cost while meeting various security constraints.
The optimal power flow (OPF) compensates for these drawbacks by replacing the one power balance equation with the nodal power flow equations. The generator limits are retained as inequality constraints, but we add to the inequality constraints the constraints on line flows.
PSSE Optimal Power Flow (OPF) from Siemens Power Technologies International (Siemens PTI) is a powerful and easy-to-use electric network analysis tool. It goes beyond traditional load flow analysis to provide the engineer with the ability to fully optimize and refine the transmission system.

Whereas the standard load flow calculates branch flows and busbar voltages based on specified set points (active/reactive power generation, generator voltage, transformer tap positions, etc.), OPF calculates the best possible values for optimising a user-specified objective function (such as minimisation of losses)
ELD is the simplest planning method and it is used for long-term planning purposes. Most of the system constraints are not considered in ELD. The optimal power flow (OPF) problem seeks to control generation/consumption to optimize certain objectives such as minimizing the generation cost or power loss in the network.
