The Services National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) provides the information necessary to manage Americas wetland habitats and their associated ecosystem benefits.
Wetland inventory: The collection and/or collation of core information for wetland management, including the provision of an information base for specific assessment and monitoring activities.
The estimated root mean square error is +/- 3.0 meters. This means that 95% of well-defined wetland boundaries can be expected to fall within about +/- 5.9 meters (+/- 19.4 feet) of the true location. The NWI map data are not intended to be used to identify wetland boundaries for wetland permitting purposes.
To identify wetlands subject to the conservation provisions, NRCS will confirm three diagnostic factors for an area: prevalence of hydrophytic vegetation (plants that live in water or saturated soil conditions) under normal circumstances, meaning vegetation that would exist if not farmed.
The NWI dataset is continually being improved and updated in various areas of the Nation and these changes are reflected on the Wetlands Mapper and data download pages on a biannual basis (typically May and October).
