Unfortunately grizzly bears were hunted to ex- tinction by humans and were gone by the early 20th century. Now only black bears live in the San Bernardi- no National Forest. Black bears can be brown, blonde, or gray, as well as black. They are generally shy and will avoid people.
It is not known what the actual bear population was in the San Bernardino Mountains in 1933 or for that matter even today. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife estimates the current bear population as 30,000 to 40,000. In 2023, the CDFW allowed for 1,700 bears to be killed during the hunting season.
Less than 75 years after the discovery of gold in 1848, almost every grizzly bear in California had been tracked down and killed. In 1924, what was thought to be a grizzly was spotted in Sequoia National Park for the last time and thereafter, grizzlies were never seen again in California.
Numerous wildlife species do well in the area, including deer, bears, mountain lions and bighorn sheep.
