Students with disabilities have different learning styles, and their literacy education should accommodate their needs. Literacy specialists work with students to strengthen their vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, orthographic (writing structure) skills and phenomic and phonological awareness (sound structures).
However, reading isnt literacy, and literacy isnt reading. The first word I would adjust in the expression mentioned above is reading. The word literacy more accurately encompasses the reading, writing and effective communication skills (speaking and listening) necessary for proficiency.
In most cases, reading specialists need a bachelors degree in education, teaching experience (is often preferable), and a reading specialist certificate. Considering all levels of required education, training, and field experience, individuals can expect to become certified reading specialists in six or seven steps.
There is a distinction between the two roles. A literacy specialist has a broader focus, supporting all areas of literacy reading, writing, listening and speaking while a reading specialist traditionally focuses on reading instruction.
