To complete the Parent-Taught Program, the Texas Dept. of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) requires a total of 14 hours of behind-the-wheel training by the parent/guardian teacher, which consists of 7 hours of instruction and 7 hours of observation. Therefore, this course takes at least 14 hours to complete.
DL-91B (Behind-the-Wheel Instruction Log) This form is used to document the 44 hours of required behind-the-wheel driving experience. Its divided into two sections: 14 hours of driving observation and 30 hours of actual driving practice, including 10 hours at night.
Parent-taught driver education in Texas allows a parent, stepparent, grandparent, step-grandparent, foster parent or legal guardian to teach their teenager how to drive. Parents and legal guardians may also designate an alternate instructor who must meet the same eligibility requirements.
