Like many mainstream denominations, between 1913 and 1920 the Brethren Church suffered from the fundamentalism versus liberalism controversy. This was ended in 1921, when the church adopted a conservative statement of faith and practice.
Brethren espouse the basic beliefs of Christianity, such as the divinity of Christ. They emphasize peace, simplicity, the equality of believers, and consistent obedience to Christ, and community discernment of scripture.
The Brethren custom is to baptize by trine immersion. Following the administration of the baptismal vows, the candidate kneels in front of the minister, facing toward the ministers left or right, and is then dunked or immersed three times forward in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Division in the 1880s After the Beissel split, the Brethren split several times because of doctrinal differences. The most traditionalist members emphasized consistency, obedience, and the order of the Brethren.
Between May 2018 and May 2020, at least sixteen congregations and nearly 4,000 members left the Church of the Brethren. This is the largest departure from the Church of the Brethren since the 1880s.
