By 2009, 26.7% of applicants got into Johns Hopkins. By 2018, the school had hit single digits and, the following year, the acceptance rate hit a record low of 9.2% and attracted over 30,000 applicants. In 2022, that number fell to just 6.5%.
Duke received 54,194 applications for the Class of 2028 and admitted 2,790 students, resulting in an acceptance rate of 5.1%. Johns Hopkins received 45,134 applications and accepted 2,558, resulting in an acceptance rate of 5.7%. So if youre just looking at percentages, Duke is slightly harder to get into.
The Hopkins admissions office considers many factors in evaluating the academic and personal qualities of applicants, but their familys alumni status is no longer one of them. JHU President Ronald J. Daniels decided to move away from legacy preference in admissions shortly after he arrived at Hopkins in 2009.
At the same time, the universitys admissions rate fell to a record low: Only 17.7 percent of those applying for entry in fall 2012 were admitted. (The previous low was 18.3 percent for entry in fall 2011.)
Johns Hopkins University President Ron Daniels led the charge to eliminate legacy admissions at JHU, with the help of a $1.8 billion gift from Michael R. Bloomberg, a member of the Homewood class of 1964, to support undergraduate financial aid.
