CDCs Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends that all infants receive hepatitis B vaccine (HepB) at birth, regardless of the HBV infection status of the birthing parent1. Infants born to HBsAg-positive people require HepB vaccine and HBIG within 12 hours of birth to protect them from infection.
Hepatitis B vaccine is usually given as 2, 3, or 4 shots. vaccine is an important part of preventing long- term illness in infants and the spread of hepatitis B in the United States. Anyone 59 years of age or younger who has not yet gotten the vaccine should be vaccinated.
Because of this risk, your baby will be given extra doses of a hepatitis B vaccine: within 24 hours of being born. at 4 weeks old. at 12 months old (if they were born on or before 30 June 2024) babies born on or after 1 July 2024 will get a new 4th dose of the 6-in-1 vaccine when theyre 18 months old instead.
The purpose of the PHBPP is to coordinate with the birthing hospital to ensure the infant receives the appropriate post-exposure prophylaxis at birth. The program also coordinates with the infants immunization provider to be sure the infant receives their additional doses of hepatitis B vaccine.
The Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program is to identify hepatitis B surface antigen-positive (HBsAg-positive) persons prenatally or at delivery for each pregnancy so that their infants, household, and sexual contacts can be tested and treated to prevent the spread of the hepatitis B virus (HBV).
