Meriwether Lewis and William Clark formed the Corps of Discovery for the first time in Clarksville, Indiana, in October of 1803.
Lewis and his group paddle down the Missouri River bagging fifteen elk and fourteen deer with little effort. Late in the evening, they use the elk hides to cover some Indian lodges to stay dry. Clark and his group paddle through the Yellowstone River badlands where they see layers of lignite coal.
In May of 1804, Lewis and Clark and a team of about 40 set out from St. Louis, then the capital of the Orleans Terriotory. This so-called Corps of Discovery traveled for about 18 months before reaching the Pacific Ocean in November of 1805. Much of their journey followed the Missouri and Columbia Rivers.
The Corps of Discovery departed from Camp Dubois (Camp Wood) at 4 pm on May 14, 1804. Under Clarks command, they traveled up the Missouri River in their keelboat and two pirogues to St. Charles, Missouri where Lewis joined them six days later. The expedition set out the next afternoon, May 21.
Lewis Clark Meet the Lakota Nation In Fort Pierre. One of the most significant events of the entire Lewis Clark Voyage of Discovery took place at what is now Lilly Park in the city of Fort Pierre, where the Bad River enters the Missouri in central South Dakota.
