In 2025, Ohio enacted a law expanding drivers education requirements to include all young drivers under age 21. Effective September 30, 2025, any person 20 years old or younger (under 21) applying for a first Ohio drivers license must complete the states full driver training program.
The newly signed state budget requires Ohioans under 21 to take drivers education training before getting a drivers license. Right now, drivers ed is required for 16- and 17-year-olds, but not for anyone over 18.
Driver Training for Under 21 Years Old Beginning on September 30, 2025, Ohioans age 18, 19, and 20 will be required to take an Ohio-approved driver training course and complete 50 hours of driving practice supervised by a licensed adult to receive a driver license.
New Ohio law prohibits student cell phone usage, requires school policy. As the 2025-2026 school year begins, it is essential for districts and schools to create engaging environments that foster learning and strong foundations for all students.
The budget goes into effect 90 days from when it was signed, which means beginning September 30, 2025, new drivers aged 18, 19, and 20 will have to complete a full driver education course: 24 hours of classroom education. 8 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. 50 hours of practice with an eligible adult.
