The Lockheed C-141 Starlifter is a retired military strategic airlifter that served with the Military Air Transport Service (MATS), its successor organization the Military Airlift Command (MAC), and finally the Air Mobility Command (AMC) of the United States Air Force (USAF).
The C-133s cargo area was 27 feet longer, four feet higher, and nearly two feet wider than that of the C-141. If it was too big (or too heavy) for the Cargomaster then it was shipped in pieces or went to the war zone on a boat instead.
The IL-76 fuselage diameter is greater than that of the C-141 to accommodate wider equipment; its landing gear is heavier for rough field use; and it can carry a larger payload, al- though to a lesser range.
The aircraft remained in service for almost 40 years until the USAF withdrew the C-141 from service on 5 May 2006, replacing the aircraft with the C-17 Globemaster III.
The C141 is capable of dropping 123 men on a single flight, more than any other plane can deliver. It was the first jet from which paratroops ever jumped. and the winning air force in MAC take on among their fellows a special luster of professionalism.

The aircraft that replaced the strategic airlift plane was the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, a plane designed not only to replace the Lockheed C-141 Starlifter but also to perform some of the tasks assigned to the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy.
