Previously, vehicles needed to be at least 20 years old to qualify for historic car tags. As of July 1, vehicles must be model year 1999 or older to qualify for historic car tags, a change that affects approximately 72,000 vehicles, or one-third of all current historic tag holders in the state.
To qualify for historic vehicle registration, a motor vehicle (passenger vehicle, truck, motorcycle, or RV) must be 25 years old or older, owned solely as a collectors item, and used for exhibition and educational purposes. Click here if the vehicle is not already titled in your name in Missouri.
To be registered as a historic vehicle (class L), your vehicle must be a passenger vehicle, motorcycle or truck (with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less): be model year 1999 or older and must not have been substantially altered, remodeled or remanufactured from the manufacturers original design.
$25 initial application fee/ $10 annual renewal. Vehicle must indicate a model date of original manufacture that is at least 25 years old. May require a vehicle inspection. Special Plate Application (form #96-0143) is required.
What Vehicles Are Exempt from Maryland Emissions Checks? Not all vehicles registered in Maryland require emissions checks. Categories of vehicles that may be exempt include 100% electric vehicles, diesel vehicles, motorcycles, farm vehicles, and any vehicles classified as historic or antique.
