What is DMAP? Better known as DMAP, a Deer Management Assistance Program is offered by many state wildlife agencies to help manage deer populations when management cant otherwise be accomplished solely through regularly issued hunting licenses, tags, or permits.
New Jerseys Outstanding Deer Program showcases the fine quality deer produced in the Garden State while recognizing the hunters who harvested them with a bow, crossbow, shotgun or muzzleloading rifle. Our Program follows the measuring standards developed by the Boone and Crockett Club.
To a large extent, deer management is doe management. Females represent the breeding potential of the population so maintaining a healthy herd involves removing enough does to balance deer numbers with available habitat and nutrition, while leaving enough to ensure the population remains sustainable.
All hunters must obtain permission to hunt on private property and written permission to hunt within the 450 feet safety zone. The NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife has provided a Hunter Landowner Courtesy Card (in this manual and in the digest) for you to use when obtaining permission to hunt.
In theory, The 7-Day Rule works like this: A good buck walks along a certain trail and visits a scrape, and you either see him or get him on trail camera. One year from that date, he should be visiting the same scrape and walking along the same trail.

A Deer Management Plan (DMP) provides a practical and effective framework within which deer managers can first acknowledge and then attempt to balance the differing uses demanded from an area of land.
Hunters must place an antlerless DMAP tag on each antlerless deer harvested. There is no daily or season limit for antlerless deer harvested by a hunter. Antlered deer must be tagged with hunters license tags (unless antlered DMAP deer tags are issued). The antlered deer limit is one per day.
