Eligibility is determined by your age and number of years of creditable service. In some cases, you must have docHubed the Minimum Retirement Age (MRA) to receive retirement benefits.
The contributions made on your behalf by the State are not refundable to you. If you stop working in a MainePERS-covered job and do not take a refund, your contributions continue to earn interest. You may withdraw your contributions at a later date, or apply for a retirement benefit if and when you qualify.
MainePERS contributing members include teachers, state, county, and municipal employees, legislators, judges, and those who work for other public entities. The State of Maine provides defined benefit retirement plans (state, teacher, legislative, and judicial) in lieu of Social Security.
If you retire or become disabled and receive MainePERS benefits, your pension may affect your Social Security benefits. This can be true of benefits based on your own work or the work of your spouse or former spouse. Your Medicare benefits will not be affected.
Annual Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) The June 30, 2025 CPI-U rate was 2.7%. Eligible State, Teacher, Judicial, and Legislative retirement plan retirees will receive a 2.7% COLA on their benefit up to $26,428.98 (which is the 2025 base), or a maximum increase of $59.47/month.
