The process of calculating, imposing, and collecting Minnesota property taxes for a year actually spans two calendar years. As shown on the next page, the two-year cycle begins with the January 2 statutory assessment date and extends all the way through the next calendar year until the property taxes have been paid.
Property taxes are paid in two installments per year, either through escrow from your mortgage provider, or directly by the taxpayer. If you have an escrow account with your mortgage provider, no action is required.
Refunds will be mailed or direct deposited in late September or early October if received by the August 15 deadline. Otherwise, you can expect your refund within 60 days of when filed.
Most lists provide the dates in a chronological order based on the calendar year, but because Minnesota taxes are paid in arrears, that order can create confusion.
The Senior Citizens Property Tax Deferral Program allows property taxpayers who are 65 years or older, and whose total household income is $96,000 or less, to defer a portion of their homestead property taxes until some later time.
