Roosevelt Island is a beautiful Island in the East River of NYC. It is often skipped, but has a lot of things to offer. These include the Roosevelt Island tram, the abandoned smallpox hospital, Lighthouse park, the Four Freedoms State Park, and the amazing views of Manhattans east side of course.
During much of the 19th and 20th centuries, the island was used by hospitals and prisons, with very limited access. It was renamed Welfare Island in 1921.
It was renamed Welfare Island in 1921. Following several proposals to redevelop Welfare Island in the 1960s, the UDC leased the island, renamed it after former U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1973, and redeveloped it as a series of residential neighborhoods.
The New York City Lunatic Asylum on Blackwells Island in the second half of the 19th century was the second largest asylum in the country, and the largest to treat both chronic and acute patients (Walker and Seaton 1888:40-42).
