The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) block grant provides federal funding to states for a wide range of benefits and activities. It includes federal requirements about work and time limits for families receiving assistance.
Subject to a few restrictions, TANF funds may be used in any way that supports one of the four statutory purposes of TANF: to provide assistance to needy families so that children can be cared for at home; to end the dependence of needy parents on government benefits by promoting job preparation, work and marriage; to
(1) provide assistance to needy families; (2) end dependence of needy parents by promoting job preparation, work, and marriage; (3) prevent and reduce out-of-wedlock pregnancies; and (4) encourage the formation and maintenance of two-parent families.
TANF = Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. Massachusetts had a cash benefit increase that did not become effective until October 2022. The cash benefit level is now $783. California increased its cash benefit levels to $1,119 effective October 2022.
On August 22, 1996, President Clinton signed PRWORA, which ended AFDC and created TANF. TANF is a broad-purpose block grant to the states, which helps fund a wide range of benefits, services, and activities to address the effects of, and root causes of, child poverty and economic disadvantage.
