Cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada, accounting for around 25 percent of all deaths in 2022. The most common types of new cancer cases in 2023 included , lung and bronchus, and prostate cancers. The estimated rate of all new cancer cases that year was around 513 per 100,000 people.
In 2024, 247,100 Canadians are estimated to hear the words you have cancer, compared to the 239,100 new cancer cases in 2023 an increase that is likely the result of Canadas growing and aging population. Cancer deaths are also expected to rise this year, from 86,700 in 2023 to 88,100 in 2024.
Cancer remains the leading cause of death in Canada. An estimated 2 in 5 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and about 1 in 4 will die from cancer.
