The Azoria Project is the excavation of an Early Iron Age and Archaic site (ca. 1200-500 B.C.), located in northeastern Crete on the eastern edge of the Bay of Mirabello, one kilometer southeast of the modern village of Kavousi.
The Institute for Aegean Prehistory (INSTAP) was established as a non-profit organization (501K) in the United States in 1982. INSTAP supports research into the civilizations of the Aegean and related areas from the Paleolithic to the beginning of writing in Greek, traditionally set at the first Olympiad in 776 BC.
Azoria is located on a hill overlooking the Gulf of Mirabello in eastern Crete, 1 km southeast of the modern village of Kavousi, and 3 km from the sea. The site occupies a strategic position (365 m above sea level) between the north Isthmus of Ierapetra and the Sitia Mountains.
